Reading comprehension at fifth grade asks students to pull meaning out of informational text, and this Sub Sandwich Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them a passage built for exactly that work. The two-page article explains how a submarine sandwich is put together, from the split roll and its crust and crumb to the order of the layers inside it, and every question sends the reader back to the text for evidence.
The passage runs 817 words across two pages, which is the independent reading load a fifth grader is expected to carry. Students read about why bread soaks up water, how a sheet of cheese shields the roll, what gives a fresh pepper its snap, what condiments do, and what changes when a sub is toasted.
