About this resource
Description
Reading About How Bodies Grow
Every student in the room is growing, and almost none of them can say how it works. This Growing Health and Fitness Reading Comprehension Worksheet answers that question with an original non-fiction passage written on a fourth grade reading level. The text follows the new height a body adds to its source in the long bones, explains the growth plate as a soft strip of tissue where new bone gets added, and then covers the food, sleep, movement and water that support the work. Every idea stays positive and practical, and nothing is framed as a problem to fix.
The passage runs two full pages, which is the on-grade length for a fourth grade reader, and the questions follow on a page of their own. Students answer four multiple choice items that reach across both passage pages, covering a supporting detail, a vocabulary word in context, a cause and effect relationship, and the main idea. A final constructed response asks them to explain how two friends the same age can be very different heights and still both be growing correctly, supported with two details from the text, which is exactly the kind of evidence-based answer a state assessment expects at this grade.
What’s Included
- A two page original non-fiction passage about growing, measured on a 4th Grade reading level
- An original illustrated scene drawn just for this passage
- Four multiple choice questions drawn from across both passage pages
- One written response item with four full width writing lines
- A complete answer key with a sample response for the written item
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- Non-fiction reading practice builds the stamina and vocabulary that fiction alone does not, and this passage is long enough to require both.
- Every hard word is defined inside the sentence that introduces it, so students practice using context instead of guessing or skipping.
- The written response makes students cite the text, which is the skill most often missed on reading assessments at this grade.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Read page one together, then let students finish page two on their own and mark any sentence that surprised them. Before the questions, ask the class to name the three things the passage says a growing body needs, and list the answers on the board. The passage ends with three seedlings on one windowsill reaching three different heights, so a quick follow up is to plant a few seeds and measure them weekly. Use this 4th grade health and nutrition worksheet in a science unit, a reading block, a sub folder, or a small group, and pair the Growing Health and Fitness Reading Comprehension Worksheet questions page with a short class discussion about why a growth chart is read as a curve instead of a single dot.
