Description
Reading starts with a habit that has nothing to do with letters: the eyes have to know where to begin and which way to travel. Print directionality, tracking a line from the left edge to the right edge and stopping at the period, is the first fluency skill a Kindergarten reader needs, and it is the one that quietly holds everything else up. The I Can Read From Left to Right Worksheet gives a young reader nine short, decodable sentences to practise that motion on, three at a time, each set paired with a friendly picture so the child always knows what the sentences are about before the first word is sounded out.
This kindergarten fluency worksheet prints as two pages: the student page and a complete answer key. Each card holds a picture and three short sentences set in large, easy type. The child reads each line from the left to the right, then circles the word that comes just before the period. That final circle is what makes the tracking visible, because a reader who has genuinely swept the whole line lands on the right word and a reader who has skipped ahead does not. Three things make this page work for emerging readers. First, the sentences are short and repetitive on purpose, so the child spends attention on the sweep of the line rather than on decoding, which is exactly what a fluency page should ask for. Teachers and parents can stretch this page in a lot of directions. Ask the child to run a finger under each line as they read, then read it again a little faster, and again with a happy voice. Cover the pictures and see whether the sentences still make sense on their own. Turn the page into a game by asking the child to find the first word of a line, then the last, then the word in the middle. At home, try the same left-to-right sweep on a cereal box, a birthday card, or a favourite storybook page, and let the child point out where a sentence starts and where it stops.
