Description
Most verbs show the past by adding -ed, but the verbs children use every day often break that rule, and this Irregular Verbs Worksheet helps third graders learn those special past tense forms. Some irregular verbs do not change at all, so today I cut and yesterday I cut. Others change just one vowel, so sit becomes sat and run becomes ran. A third group ends with the letters -ght, so think becomes thought and teach becomes taught. Forming and using regular and irregular verbs is a third grade language standard, and noticing these patterns makes the forms much easier to remember.
This printable irregular verbs worksheet moves from thinking about patterns to using the verbs in real sentences. Students read nine verbs in the word box, write the past tense of each one, and sort it under the rule it follows: Stays the Same, One Letter Changes, or Ends in -ght. A worked example at the top of each column shows how the rule works. Then they read four sentences in which a verb was spelled with a wrong -ed ending, such as catched or finded, and write the correct past tense on the line. This second part works as a past tense verbs worksheet for spotting and fixing a mistake young writers make all the time. A full answer key is included on the second page.
