About this resource
Description
Prepositions are the little words that tell WHERE: over the fence, under the porch, through the tunnel. The Use the Prepositions Game turns the Use the Prepositions Worksheet into a playful lesson in a claymation backyard, with Alphy the Funzy and a busy little mouse. Kids read each sentence, ask “Where?”, and tap the preposition from the word bank that fills in the blank. It is a preposition game for 2nd through 4th grade that makes a tricky part of speech easy to see and fun to practice.
Each round opens with a short “Watch me!” example: the clay mouse runs AROUND a box until he is dizzy, then floats ABOVE it on a red balloon, and Alphy shows how to ask where and pick the word. Then kids complete the eight sentences from the worksheet, in order. Every word in the word bank has a tiny mouse-and-box picture of its meaning, like a classroom anchor chart. A wrong pick gets a kind hint that describes the motion (“The milk goes INSIDE the bowl. Which preposition means going inside?”), and every right answer is read back as the whole sentence with the preposition stressed. Play it in your browser on a phone, tablet, Chromebook or computer.

Here are three reasons this preposition game helps kids learn. First, Alphy models the thinking out loud every round: read the sentence, ask where, then choose the word, the same steps teachers use. Second, the mouse-and-box pictures show what each position word means, so kids can see the difference between over and above, or across and through. Third, hearing the finished sentence read back helps children check that it makes sense and remember how the preposition is used.
Keep the learning going after the game. Hide a small toy and give clues with prepositions (“It is behind the lamp, under a pillow”), or play Simon Says with position words. For practice on paper, print the matching Use the Prepositions Worksheet.
