Reading comprehension is what happens after a student can decode the words on a page: the ability to follow a story, hold the details in order, and explain what the text actually means. Fourth graders are asked to do more than remember what happened. They have to find the main idea, trace cause and effect, and work out what a phrase means from the sentences around it. The It’s Never Easy Reading Comprehension Worksheet builds all three of those skills with one original story and a set of questions that send students back into the text for evidence.
This 4th grade reading comprehension worksheet opens with a two-page story about Ryleigh, who promises to have her school garden ready by Monday and then spends an entire Saturday fighting a rusted gate, stubborn weeds, a flat wheelbarrow tire, a split bag of soil, a cracked rake, and finally the rain. A friend turns up at noon with lunch, and the two of them finish the job together. Students read the whole story first, then answer four multiple-choice questions and two written-response questions on the following page. Use it for independent practice, a small-group text discussion, a reading center, or a quick check before a unit test.

There are three reasons this resource helps students grow as readers. First, the passage is written to a fourth-grade reading level and measured against it, so the vocabulary and the sentence length match what students meet on a state assessment instead of sitting a grade too easy or a grade too hard. Second, every question is answerable from the text, which trains students to go back and hunt for the line that proves their answer rather than guessing from memory. Third, the It’s Never Easy Reading Comprehension Worksheet mixes question types on purpose — main idea, cause and effect, and figurative language — so students practice shifting between different kinds of thinking inside one story.
Try a few other ways to teach this skill. Read the story aloud one paragraph at a time and stop to ask students what they think will go wrong next, then compare their predictions with the text. Have students underline every problem Ryleigh runs into and number them in order to build a sequencing chart. Ask them to retell the ending from her friend’s point of view. At home, pair the story with a real project that takes longer than expected, such as baking bread or planting a pot, and talk about the moments when it would have been easy to quit.
