Reading comprehension is the skill of holding on to a story while you read it, and then using what the text actually says to answer a question about it. Third graders are moving from reading aloud to reading on their own, so they need practice with a story long enough to hold a beginning, a middle and an end. The Jilly the Giraffe Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives them exactly that: one original animal story about a giraffe whose height feels like a problem until the day it turns out to be a gift. Because the story carries a clear sequence, a cause, a change of feeling and a main idea, it lets students practise four different comprehension moves on a single page.
This 3rd grade animals worksheet is built as a three-page printable. Page one holds the illustrated story, page two holds the questions, and page three is the complete answer key. Have students read the whole passage first without stopping, then read it a second time with the question page beside them so they can hunt for the evidence.
