About This Worksheet
Students read a two-page informational passage about how limestone caves form underground, from the weak acid in rainwater to the slow growth of stalactites, stalagmites and stone columns. The text is written at a fifth grade reading level. Some hard words are defined right in their own sentences, while others must be worked out from the surrounding details. After reading, students answer four multiple-choice questions about word meaning, including one built on the Latin parts of the word subterranean. They finish with a constructed response that asks them to define a word and cite the context clues that prove it.
