The passage follows Calvin through a week of whispers in the kitchen until his parents share their big news: a new baby is coming in the spring. Second graders meet a story shaped exactly the way their state assessment shapes one, with a clear beginning, a turning point and a lesson at the end.
This 2nd grade reading comprehension passage pairs a 184-word story with a full-color scene and five questions. Four multiple-choice items ask students to find a stated fact, recall a detail, explain why Calvin felt sad, and name what he learned. The fifth question is a written response with two lines, and the directions tell students to use two things from the text to show how they know.
