A digit’s value depends entirely on where it sits. The 4 in 48,205 is not worth four, and it is not worth four thousand either — it is in the ten-thousands place, so it is worth 40,000. This ten thousands place value worksheet keeps the focus on that one column of a six-digit number, because it is the place fourth graders most often misread once numbers grow past four digits and the commas start doing real work.
A labelled place-value chart opens the page with 485,301 spread across its six columns and the ten-thousands column shaded, so the rule is visible before any question is asked. Six numbers follow, and the student writes the value of the digit in that place for each one — including a number whose ten-thousands digit is zero, which is the item that separates reading a position from copying a digit.
