Description
Place value is the idea that the spot a digit sits in decides what that digit is worth, and it is the foundation under every four-digit number a third grader reads, writes, and compares. This Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones Place Value Worksheet gives students focused practice moving between expanded form and standard form, so a string like 3 thousands + 4 hundreds + 8 tens + 2 ones becomes the number 3,482 without any guessing. Students also work in the other direction, breaking a written number back into the four parts that build it, and they meet the zero that quietly holds a column open.
Each part of this 3rd grade place value worksheet builds on the one before it. Part A asks students to add the parts and write the standard number on the line, and two of those items are printed out of place order on purpose, so children have to read the words instead of copying digits straight down the page. Part B turns the task around: the number is given, and students fill in how many thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones it holds. Part C closes with two short written explanations about the value of a single digit in a kite string measurement. Print it as morning work, as a quick check after a lesson, or as homework.

This Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, Ones Place Value Worksheet helps children learn the skill in three ways. First, it practises both directions of the same idea, building a number from its parts and taking a number apart again, so students see that expanded form and standard form describe one number and not two. Second, the out-of-order items and the zeros stop children from matching digits by position, which is the habit that hides a shaky understanding. Third, the written explanations in Part C ask students to defend an answer in their own words, which is exactly what a test question will ask them to do later.
Away from the page, build numbers with base ten blocks or with four labelled cups for thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
