Description
Poetry has two sounds a young reader can hear before they can name them: the beat that keeps a line moving, and the matching sounds that tie the ends of lines together. This rhyme and rhythm worksheet gives students a short original poem about a piece of granite and asks them to listen for both. Reading the poem out loud is the first step, because rhythm lives in the voice long before it lives on the page, and a poem read silently gives up half of what it has to teach.
The poem on this page is written in a steady pattern of eight beats and six beats, with a clean rhyme closing each stanza, so the pattern is regular enough for a third grader to find on their own. Students count the beats in every line, record the two rhyming words hiding in each stanza, and then explain the pattern they discovered in their own words. That last step is what turns listening into thinking, and it is the part teachers can use to see whether a student really heard the beat or simply copied a number.
