How to Teach S Blends
An s blend is two letters that keep both of their sounds, and second graders meet them everywhere: sn, sk, sp, sl and sm. This s blends fill in the blank worksheet puts all five of those blends on one page and asks a child to do the harder half of the job, which is reading past the first two letters. The word box holds six words and two of them start with the same blend, so a reader who stops at sn cannot tell snail from snack and has to finish the word before choosing.
Each of the six sentences gives a clue that only one box word can answer. Students read the sentence, find the word that finishes it, and write that word on the wide line inside the sentence. Every line is the same length, so the size of the blank never hints at which answer belongs there. The second page is a complete answer key with every missing word written in a friendly handwriting font, so a teacher, a parent or a student partner can check the page in under a minute.

Three Reasons This Helps Students

Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Read the word box aloud together first and have students tap the two blend letters at the front of each word. Cover the box and see how many of the six words a child can recall by their blend.
