Description
Reading a word closely enough to notice that hat and hot are not the same word is one of the first real comparing skills a young reader ever uses, and this same and different words worksheet gives first graders a full page of practice doing it. Comparing and contrasting starts small: before a child can tell two characters or two stories apart, they have to be able to look carefully at two things that are almost alike and say what is the same and what is different. Working with short, familiar words makes that thinking visible, and it builds the careful left-to-right tracking that fluent reading depends on.
The page has two parts. In the first part, the child reads four words in a row and circles the one word that is different from the rest. In the second part, three words are given and the child circles the two words that are the same. Every word is a short, decodable first grade word, and the pairs differ by a single letter or sound, so children have to slow down and look at the whole word instead of guessing from the first letter. Print the sheet, read the directions together, and let children work independently or with a partner. A complete answer key is included on the second page for quick checking.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It makes comparing concrete. Children practice noticing sameness and difference on something they can see all at once, which is the same thinking they will later use on characters, settings and whole texts.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents

Ask children to read each row out loud before they circle anything, then have them explain what makes the odd word different. Older or faster finishers can turn the page over and write their own row of four words, three the same and one different, for a partner to solve. For a small group, cover the answers and read a row aloud so children have to hear the difference before they see it.
