Description
Sorting words into groups is one of the first ways young readers learn to compare and contrast. When a child decides that apple, pear, and plum all belong with fruit — but chair does not — they are noticing what a set of words share and what makes one word stand apart. This Same Different Categories Worksheet gives first graders steady practice at exactly that: reading a group word, testing each choice against it, and telling themselves why one word is the odd one out. Category work like this builds the vocabulary networks that later support inference, main idea, and every compare and contrast question a reading test can ask.
This 1st grade compare and contrast worksheet is a two-part, no-prep printable. In Part A the group word is printed in a purple label at the start of each row, and students circle every word that belongs with it. In Part B the group word is missing, so students have to work out the hidden category for themselves before circling the single word that does not fit. Read the directions aloud once, work the first row together, then let students finish on their own. The included answer key makes it easy to check the page in seconds or to let a partner score it.

Three things make this Same Different Categories Worksheet effective. First, every choice is a short, high-frequency noun a first grader can already decode, so all of the thinking goes into the category rather than into sounding out the word. Second, the odd word in each row comes from a plainly different group — furniture, dishes, clothing, school supplies — so there is exactly one defensible answer and nothing to guess at. Third, Part B takes the group label away, which turns a matching task into real reasoning: students have to name the category before they can test anything against it.
Keep the thinking going once the page is finished. Ask students to add one more word to each group and say why it fits. Play a quick round of odd one out with classroom objects on a tray. Sort a stack of picture cards into two piles and have a partner guess the rule. At home, turn a grocery trip into a sorting game — fruit, drinks, things we wear — and ask your child to explain each choice out loud. Naming the reason is the part that carries over into reading.
