Description
Keeping a reading log is one of the simplest ways to turn reading into a habit, and the Second Grade What I am Reading Worksheet gives your students one clean place to record every book they finish. Second graders are moving out of learning to read and into reading to learn, so a running list of titles in their own handwriting shows them exactly how much they have read this year. It also gives you a quick, honest picture of what each child is choosing on their own.
This 2nd grade genres worksheet pairs the log with a reference strip of six kinds of stories, so students name the genre of each book as they record it. The page has three columns, Date, Book Title and Genre, and nine wide rows sized for second grade handwriting. A student writes the date they finished the book, copies the title, and picks the genre from the strip at the top of the page. Print one for each child at the start of a month or a unit, and let them fill it in as they read.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It makes progress visible. A child who can see nine finished titles on one page believes they are a reader, and that belief is what keeps them picking up the next book.
- It teaches genre without a test. Naming the genre of a real book the child chose is far stickier than matching genre words on a quiz, and the reference strip keeps the vocabulary in front of them every time.
- It builds independence. Students fill the log themselves, which turns independent reading time into something they own and record rather than something they are assigned.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Staple a stack of these into a reading folder and make the log the first thing students reach for after silent reading. Ask them to circle the genre they have read the least and hunt for one book in it. Use the finished pages in a reading conference: the dates show pace, the titles show taste, and the genre column shows whether a reader is stuck in one aisle of the library.
