Telling the short /e/ sound from the long /e/ sound is a first grade turning point, and this short and long vowel e worksheet gives students a clear, low-pressure way to practice it. Words like bed and bee look alike on the page but sound completely different out loud, so children need repeated chances to say a word, listen to the middle sound, and decide which vowel sound they heard. This printable page builds that listening habit one word at a time.
This short and long vowel e worksheet works through two short activities. In Part A, students say five word pairs aloud and circle the word with the long /e/ sound. In Part B, they read a six-word bank and write each word into the Short E or Long E column. Two picture clues — a hen and a green bean — sit under the columns to model exactly what each sound looks like in a real word.
