Short Vowel O Worksheet

The short o sound is one of the five vowel sounds a beginning reader has to hear before decoding really opens up, and it is the one children most often blur into short a or short u. This Short Vowel O Worksheet builds the sound two ways in a single page: first by ear, naming pictures and deciding which ones carry the /o/ in the middle, and then by eye, reading a sentence and writing the short o word that finishes it. Hearing it and spelling it are different skills, and a child can be solid at one while the other is still shaky.

Part A prints six pictures in a two-by-three grid — a sock, a kite, a bed, a bus, a mop, and a log — and asks the student to say each name out loud and circle the three with the short o sound. Nothing is labeled, on purpose: the moment a word is printed under a picture the child reads instead of listens. Part B gives a four-word box and three short sentences with a blank at the end of each. One box word is a deliberate extra that finishes none of them, so a student cannot simply use up the list in order. Three things make this 1st grade phonics worksheet stronger than a page of circling. First, the three correct pictures are not a row, not a column, and not an even step through the grid, so a child who is pattern-matching instead of listening gets nothing for it. Second, the pictures in Part A and the words in Part B share no word at all — if the box listed the same words the pictures showed, a student could pair them up and finish Part A without hearing a single vowel. Third, the sentences are written so exactly one box word can defend each blank, which turns the writing half into a real decision rather than a process of elimination.

Teachers and parents can keep going with the same six pictures. Say each name slowly and stretch the middle sound, then ask whether the mouth opens the way it does in hot. Change one letter at a time and hear what happens: log becomes leg, sock becomes sick, mop becomes map. Hunt for short o around the room — clock, block, doll, box — and add each find to a class list.
