Description
The short i sound is one of the first vowel sounds a young reader has to hear on its own, and it hides inside dozens of everyday words like six, ring, dish and hill. This short vowel i worksheet slows that sound down so children can listen for it, find it in pictures, and then write words that use it. Once a child can hear short i reliably, decoding whole families of consonant-vowel-consonant words stops being guesswork and starts being reading.
This printable works in two steps. First, students say the name of each of the six pictures out loud and circle the three that carry the short i sound. Saying the word aloud is the point: the picture removes the spelling so the child has to judge by ear alone. Then students read three short sentences and finish each one with a word from the word box, which moves the same sound from listening into writing. A complete answer key is included, so the page grades in seconds at a station, in a small group, or at the kitchen table.
