The silent e is the letter that changes everything. When a final e is added to a short-vowel word, it stays quiet and tells the vowel before it to say its own name, turning kit into kite, cap into cape, and tub into tube. Learning to spot that pattern is one of the biggest jumps a beginning reader makes, because it unlocks hundreds of everyday words. Students begin with Part A, finding and circling five silent e words hidden in the puzzle grid: bike, cake, kite, lake, and rope. The words run across, down, and on a diagonal, so children have to scan carefully instead of reading straight along a single line. In Part B, they use the same word box to finish four short sentences, choosing the one word that makes sense in each. One box word is left over on purpose, so students cannot simply match words to blanks in order.
