How to teach End Punctuation
Using Slap Shot Hockey Telling Sentences Activity, students practice reading and identifying telling sentences.
Being able to write with capital letters and end punctuation is crucial for your students to be able to clearly communicate their message. A telling sentence ends with a period. This activity gives your students practice with writing periods at the end of sentences.
The object of the game is to travel around the game board to shoot a goal and score! Place your playing pieces on the board. The first player picks the top card and reads the sentence. The player must determine if it is a telling sentence or not. If it is a telling sentence, the player moves one space on the game board. If it is an asking sentence, the player does not move. (Sentences with and without punctuation are provided).

Introduce this activity by writing three different sentences on the board. Examples are “I like ice cream”, “Who wants to eat ice cream” and “Lets go get ice cream”. Ask students to help you put a period, exclamation point, and a question mark at the end of each sentence. Next, have students share what they notice about sentences ending with periods. Then, students complete activity independently or with a partner. Once finished, students share their own examples!
