About this resource
Description
Putting things in order by size is one of the first big ideas in kindergarten math. This Smallest to Biggest Worksheet helps young learners look closely at objects, compare how big each one is, and put three things in order from smallest to biggest. Comparing sizes builds the careful looking and number sense that children need for measurement, sorting, and counting later on.
The worksheet has two short parts. In the first part, children see the same cupcake drawn three times at three different sizes. They write 1, 2, and 3 in the boxes to show the order from the smallest cupcake to the biggest one. In the second part, the pictures are all drawn about the same size, so children have to think about the real objects instead. Is a strawberry smaller than an apple? Is a mitten smaller than a chair? Children write 1, 2, and 3 under each picture to show real-life size order. This kindergarten size order worksheet works well for morning work, a math center, small group practice, or homework.

Why This Worksheet Helps Kids
First, it moves children from what they can see to what they know. Ordering drawn pictures is a great warm-up, and ordering real objects asks them to use their own experience of the world. Second, it practices writing the numbers 1, 2, and 3 in a meaningful way, since each number now stands for a position in an order. Third, the bright sticker-style pictures and clear boxes keep the page simple, so young learners can focus on the thinking.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Before starting the smallest to biggest worksheet, gather three real objects from the classroom or home, such as a crayon, a book, and a backpack, and let children line them up from smallest to biggest. Talk about the words small, bigger, and biggest while they work. After the page is done, invite children to draw three things of their own in size order, or go on a size hunt around the room.
