The hard part of a subtraction word problem is almost never the subtracting. It is working out which of the two numbers in the story is the one you started with, and whether the question is asking what is left, what was lost, or how much more one amount is than another. This Solve Subtraction Word Problems Worksheet gives third graders four short stories to read that way, with a work box under each one so the thinking has somewhere to live.
All four problems use three-digit numbers within 1,000, and every one of them needs regrouping. A school library lends out books, an orchard sells apples, a food drive sends cans to a shelter, and the fourth problem is a two-step story: a craft box of beads loses some to a bracelet and then some more to a necklace, so the answer to the first step becomes the starting number for the second. A short reminder box at the top of the page walks through the regrouping move, and an answer key with the worked subtraction is included.
