From our teachers' playbook

Regroup like a pro!

What do 3rd graders learn about subtraction?

Third graders become fluent with subtraction within 1,000. They regroup across tens and hundreds, even across zeros, like 503 − 278 = 225. They round numbers to estimate first, so they can tell if their answer makes sense. They also use subtraction in two-step word problems and in real life, like finding how much time has passed. The click comes when kids check their subtraction with addition and see it matches perfectly!

Our favorite ways to make subtraction stick

Regrouping is the big skill this year. These moves help kids understand it and get it right.

Think aloud the borrowing

Work 503 − 278 slowly out loud: "I can't take 8 from 3. No tens to borrow, so I go to the hundreds." Show each trade with arrows. Seeing someone think through zeros makes them less scary.

Why it works: handing over the work step by step, from teacher to student, is one of the most widely used teaching frameworks (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Estimate first

Before solving, have kids round and estimate: "500 minus 300 is about 200." Then solve and compare. If the answer is way off, something went wrong. A quick estimate catches most mistakes.

Why it works: a big review of study methods ranked quick self-quizzing among the most powerful ways to remember (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Blocks for the hard ones

For regrouping across zeros, let kids use base ten blocks. They trade a hundred for ten tens, then a ten for ten ones. Once they've done it with blocks, the paper steps make sense.

Why it works: the U.S. Department of Education's guide for teaching elementary math recommends moving from hands-on objects to drawings to numbers.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What subtraction should a 3rd grader know?

Third graders should subtract within 1,000 fluently, including regrouping across tens, hundreds and zeros. They also use estimation to check answers and solve two-step word problems.

How do you teach subtraction across zeros?

Use base ten blocks to show trading a hundred for ten tens, and then a ten for ten ones. Then connect each trade to the steps on paper. Going slowly the first few times helps a lot.

How can kids check their subtraction?

Add the answer to the number you subtracted. If you get the starting number, you're right! For 503 − 278 = 225, check that 225 + 278 = 503.

How can I practice subtraction at home?

Use money and shopping. "You have $5.00, the toy costs $3.25, how much is left?" Real-life problems make subtraction meaningful.
