About this resource
Description
Dividing a two-digit number by a one-digit number is where long division stops being a trick and starts being a procedure a child owns. Fourth graders have to divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and then decide what a leftover amount actually means. This Solving Dividing 1 into 2 Digit Worksheet gives them six problems set in the standard long-division frame, with room under each one to show every step instead of guessing at a quotient.
Part A holds six problems with a one-digit divisor and a two-digit dividend. Three of them come out even and three leave a remainder, mixed in no particular order, so students cannot predict an answer from its position on the page. Part B is a multi-step word problem with a work box, and it asks the child to interpret the remainder rather than just report it. Used as morning work, as guided practice, or as homework, this 4th grade division worksheet gives a teacher a clear picture of where a student’s procedure breaks down.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- Answer key
- 6 long-division problems and 1 multi-step word problem with a work box
There are three reasons this page helps children learn the skill. First, every problem is drawn in the real long-division frame with a proper division wall and overbar, so students practise placing the quotient where it belongs instead of writing a bare answer. Second, the space below each problem is the work space, which makes showing your work the default rather than an extra instruction. Third, mixing even quotients with remainders forces a genuine check at the end of every problem, which is the habit that catches errors. Working through this Solving Dividing 1 into 2 Digit Worksheet builds accuracy and the confidence that comes with it.
Teachers and parents can extend the skill in easy ways. Ask students to multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder to prove each answer. Turn the word problem into a discussion: why does one leftover bulb still need a whole extra row? Hand out a small set of counters and let a child act out a division with a remainder before writing it. Skip counting aloud by the divisor before starting a problem also makes the first estimate much faster.
