Sports are one of the first topics young students can talk about with real confidence, and this sports crossword puzzle worksheet turns that everyday interest into vocabulary practice. Third graders read eight short clues about familiar games, decide which sport each clue describes, and spell that sport correctly into the crossword grid. Because there is no word bank, students cannot count squares to guess an answer, so every entry rewards careful reading.
Print the page and hand it out as morning work, a literacy center, an early finisher activity, or a light homework sheet. Students work across and down, using the letters they have already placed as clues for the words they have not solved yet. When the grid is full, a short written question asks them to choose one sport and explain how its equipment helps a player compete, which pushes the sheet past simple recall and into explanation.
