Putting words in ABC order is a skill children use every time they open a dictionary, a glossary, or an index. This sports alphabetical order worksheet gives third graders ten sports words to sort, and every one of them shares a first letter with another word in the box, so students must look past the first letter to decide which word comes first.
About This Worksheet
In Part A, students read a box of ten sports words, including baseball, basketball, golf, gymnastics, hockey, soccer, and track, and write them in ABC order on ten numbered lines. Five pairs of words begin with the same letter. Soccer and softball only separate at the third letter, and baseball and basketball wait until the fourth, so careful letter-by-letter checking is required. In Part B, students circle the word in each of four pairs that comes first, then write the number of the letter they had to compare. A cheerful watercolor tennis racket ties the page to the sports theme.
