About this resource

Description

This Bowling Time Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives 3rd Grade readers a short, friendly non-fiction story about two friends who spend a rainy afternoon at the bowling alley. Bowling is a game most children have seen on a screen or at a birthday party, but very few have had the rules explained to them, so the passage teaches the sport while the reader practices the skill that actually matters: reading closely enough to find an answer and point to the sentence it came from. Along the way the story explains why bowlers wear special shoes, what a strike and a spare are, and how a game is divided into frames. Because the content is new to most students, they cannot answer from memory — they have to go back to the text, which is exactly what the bowling time reading comprehension worksheet is built to make them do.

The sheet runs to three pages. Page one holds the illustrated story on its own, so students can read it without questions crowding the page. Page two carries the Name and Date line, four fill-in-the-bubble questions, and one written response that asks students to gather two details from across the whole passage. Page three is the complete answer key, with the written response answered in full sentences a teacher can compare against. Used as a guided reading passage, a literacy-center task, or a quick independent check, this 3rd grade reading comprehension worksheet takes most students about fifteen to twenty minutes.

What’s Included

  • 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
  • A 239-word original non-fiction passage written on a 3rd Grade reading level
  • An original illustrated scene of the two friends watching a ball roll down the lane
  • 4 multiple-choice questions with three answer choices each
  • 1 written-response question with three writing lines
  • A complete answer key on its own page

Why This Helps Kids Learn

  • Every answer is in the text. Each question is written against a specific sentence in the passage, so students practice locating evidence rather than guessing from what they already know about sports.
  • The written response reaches across the whole story. Students must pull two details from different paragraphs to explain how they know the two friends had a good time, which is the inference work third graders are assessed on.
  • New vocabulary is explained in context. Words like strike, spare, frame and foul line each arrive in a sentence that defines them, so students get practice using surrounding text to work out a word they have not met before.

Ways to Use It

Read the story aloud once as a class, then have students reread it silently before they touch the questions. In a small group, ask each student to underline the sentence that answers each question before filling in a bubble — that one habit turns a quick worksheet into real evidence practice. For homework, send page one home the night before and save the questions for the next morning so families can enjoy the story together. Early finishers can turn the written response into a short paragraph on the back, or explain the scoring rules to a partner in their own words.
