Description
A word search is one of the friendliest ways to build vocabulary, because a student has to hold a whole word in mind, letter by letter, while scanning a grid for it. This Thanksgiving Words Search Worksheet turns that scanning practice into holiday vocabulary practice for third graders. Six Thanksgiving words sit in a word box at the top of the page, and each one is hidden somewhere in an eleven-by-eleven letter grid, running across, down, or on a diagonal. Because the words go in three different directions, students cannot solve the puzzle by reading straight down one column; they have to look carefully, which is exactly the visual discrimination skill the activity is meant to build.
This 3rd grade thanksgiving word search does not stop at the puzzle. Part B gives students six sentences, each with one bold clue word and one blank, and asks them to write the word from the box that matches the meaning of the bold word. A student who reads that the round orange gourd on the porch is a blank has to connect gourd to pumpkin, which turns a hunt-and-circle page into a real vocabulary lesson. The blanks are sized and spaced for third grade handwriting, and a complete answer key shows both the circled puzzle words and every written answer.

There are three reasons this Thanksgiving Words Search Worksheet earns its place in a November lesson plan. First, it pairs recognition with meaning, so a student who finds harvest in the grid also has to show what harvest means. Second, the words are the wholesome heart of the holiday, corn, family, feast, harvest, pumpkin, and turkey, so the vocabulary is worth keeping long after the puzzle is finished. Third, it is quiet, independent work that a whole class can start at the same time, which makes it useful on a short week when the schedule keeps changing.
Teachers and parents can stretch the page in several directions. Ask students to write their own sentence for each box word once the blanks are filled, or to sort the six words into things you eat and things you do. Send the sheet home as a conversation starter and let families add two more words they would put in a Thanksgiving word box. Some classrooms turn the grid into a race, with partners timing each other, and then trade papers to check the answers against the key together.
