About this resource
Description
Gratitude is one of the first big ideas young writers can put into their own words, and Thanksgiving is the perfect season to practice it. This Thanksgiving I am Thankful List Worksheet gives 2nd Grade students a simple, joyful place to name the people, places, and everyday blessings they are most grateful for. Stopping to name what you are thankful for builds vocabulary, sharpens sentence writing, and gives children a reason to write that comes straight from their own life instead of from a prompt they have never lived.
Print the sheet and hand it out during a Thanksgiving unit, a morning meeting, or a family gathering. Students begin by writing six things they are thankful for, then choose one item from that list and explain their thinking in two complete sentences. A large drawing box at the bottom of this 2nd grade Thanksgiving worksheet lets them illustrate the one thing that matters most to them. Because every response comes from the student, no two finished pages ever look the same.
What’s Included
- 1 print-ready PDF worksheet
- A six-item thankful list with roomy writing lines
- A two-sentence written response
- A full-size drawing box
This resource helps children in three ways. First, the six-line list is a low-pressure entry point, so even reluctant writers fill the page with ideas quickly. Second, the two-sentence response moves students from simply listing to explaining, which is exactly the opinion and reasoning work second graders are expected to do. Third, the drawing box invites students who think in pictures to show their thinking before or after they write. Together, the three parts of the Thanksgiving I am Thankful List Worksheet turn a holiday activity into genuine writing practice.
Teachers and parents can stretch the activity in plenty of fun ways. Hang the finished pages on a bulletin board to build a class gratitude wall, or cut the six list items apart and glue them onto paper feathers to make a giant turkey. At home, ask everyone at the table to share one item from their list before the meal begins. You can also revisit the sheet in December and again in the spring so children can see how their answers change across the year, or turn the two sentences into a thank-you note mailed to the person they named.
