Taking away two is a small, friendly step up from taking away one, and this Subtracting Two Writing Equations Worksheet helps kindergartners see it, count it and write it down. When a child counts a row of pictures, finds the two that are crossed out, and writes how many are left, subtraction becomes something real they can point to. Writing the whole equation, not just the answer, connects the objects on the page to the numbers and the minus sign they will use in every later math lesson.
In the first part of this Subtracting Two Writing Equations Worksheet, students look at three rows of bright marker-style pictures: tomatoes, pumpkins and toy drums. The last two pictures in each row are crossed out. Students count the whole group and write that number in the first box, write the two that were taken away, and then write how many are left. The second part moves the same skill to bare numbers, with four take-away-two facts within ten and a big box for each answer.
