This Subway Reading Comprehension Worksheet gives 5th Grade students an original four-page story to read closely and a short question set that asks them to prove every answer from the text. Reading comprehension is the skill of holding on to details while a story moves forward, then using those details to explain what happened and why. In this narrative, a girl named Isabel takes her first ride on a city subway with her cousin Richard and their grandmother, and every step of the trip gives readers something concrete to track: the stairs down, the wall map, the ticket, the turnstile, the platform, and finally the train itself.
The story runs across two full pages so that students build real reading stamina, not just a quick skim. New vocabulary is defined right inside the sentence that introduces it, so a reader meets the words turnstile and platform in context and can figure them out without stopping. After the story, students answer four multiple choice questions and one written response. The questions are drawn from across both story pages, which means a student cannot answer them from the first paragraph alone. An answer key is included on the final page.
