About this resource
Description
This suffix less worksheet gives second grade students focused practice with one of the most useful word endings in English. The suffix -less attaches to a root word and changes its meaning to “without,” turning a naming word into a describing word: harm becomes harmless, cloud becomes cloudless, and fear becomes fearless. Once children notice that pattern, they can unlock dozens of new words on their own instead of guessing at them, which is exactly what strong readers do every day.
The printable worksheet moves through three short activities that build on each other. Students begin by adding the ending to six root words and writing the new word on a wide handwriting line. Next they use a word box to finish three sentences, choosing the word that truly fits the clue. Finally they draw a line to match each -less word to its meaning. Print it single sided, hand it out during a word study block, small group rotation, or morning work, and let students work independently. The answer key on the last page makes checking quick.
What’s Included
- One printable worksheet page plus a full answer key page
- Part A: six root words to build with the suffix -less
- Part B: a three word bank and three sentences to complete
- Part C: match three -less words to their meanings
- Original artwork and roomy second grade handwriting lines
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It teaches a pattern, not a list. Learning that -less means “without” lets students figure out unfamiliar words instead of memorizing them one at a time.
- It connects spelling to meaning. Students see the root word stay whole while the ending changes what the word does in a sentence.
- It builds confidence in context. The sentence activity asks children to prove their choice with a clue, so word study turns into real reading practice.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Use this 2nd grade suffixes worksheet as a pre-test on Monday and a quick check on Friday to show growth. Challenge early finishers to write their own sentence for seedless or spotless. Hang a class chart and add every -less word students spot in books all week. At home, play a quick game in the car: say a root word and let your child answer with the -less version. Pair this suffix less worksheet with a prefix activity so children begin to see how word parts work together at the front and back of a root.
