Description
The suffix ed turns a verb into its past tense, and for one whole family of short verbs it also changes the spelling: hop becomes hopped, not hoped. This suffix ed worksheet teaches second graders the doubling rule that governs those words. When a one-syllable verb ends with a single vowel followed by a single consonant, that final consonant doubles before ed is added. Learning the pattern early keeps written work accurate and gives children a rule they can apply to hundreds of verbs instead of memorizing each spelling one at a time.
This 2nd grade suffixes worksheet opens with a short worked example, sip + p + ed = sipped, so the pattern is visible before the first question. Part one prints six base verbs in bold word pills with a writing line beside each, and children write the past tense form. Part two moves the same skill into sentences: four sentences each carry a bold base word, and children write its past tense in the blank. Ask children to hunt for doubled ed words in a favorite picture book and copy three of them into a notebook. Then have them write one silly sentence for each word they found.
