A suffix is a word ending that changes what a word means or when it happened, and ED is one of the very first suffixes a young reader has to spell correctly. This Adding Suffix ED Worksheet narrows that big idea down to the friendliest rule in the whole set: when a base verb already ends in a silent e, you do not write the full ED ending at all. The e is already there, so you just add d. Bake becomes baked, smile becomes smiled, and the base word stays whole and easy to see.
Using this Adding Suffix ED Worksheet, students work through two short parts. In Part A they change six silent e verbs into the past tense and write each new word on its own line. In Part B they read four sentences, find the green base verb at the end of each one, and write the correct past tense form in the blank. Print the sheet, hand out pencils, and let students work on their own, with a partner, or in a small guided group at the table. The answer key on page two makes checking the work fast.
