Description
Telling a fact from an opinion, and then choosing the facts that actually back up an opinion, is one of the biggest reading jumps students make in fourth grade. The Topic Opinion and Supporting Evidence Graphic Organizer Worksheet walks students through that jump one step at a time. Students begin by labeling seven statements about a single topic, then move the strongest statements into an organizer that shows exactly how a topic, an opinion, and supporting evidence fit together. Because every sentence is about the same school garden, students can compare the statements side by side instead of guessing.
Start with Part A, where students read each sentence and write Fact or Opinion on the line beside it. Remind them that a fact can be checked or measured, while an opinion tells what someone thinks or feels. In Part B students fill in the graphic organizer: the topic and the opinion are already written for them, and three labeled lines wait for the facts that support that opinion. Part C closes with the tricky one — students find the single fact that is true but does not help support the opinion at all. Use the organizer as a pre-writing page before an opinion paragraph, with each evidence line becoming one sentence. Read a short news article together and fill a blank organizer as a class.
