About this resource
Description
Naming the things we ride in is one of the first vocabulary sets a first grader owns completely, and this Transportation Names Worksheet turns that knowledge into writing practice. Children already recognise a school bus, a pickup truck and a bicycle on sight. What they are still learning is how to hold a picture in mind, find the matching word in a word box, and copy it letter by letter onto a line. That single move — picture to word to written word — is what makes a spoken vocabulary into a reading and spelling vocabulary.
The sheet gives nine pictures on nine cards and one word box holding all nine words. A child looks at each picture, finds its word, and writes it on the line inside that card. The words are short enough to spell at first grade — bike, boat, bus, car, plane, sled, train, truck and wagon — and the box is printed in alphabetical order while the pictures are deliberately not, so the task cannot be finished by copying straight down. Each picture names exactly one word in the box, so there is nothing to argue with on the key. Use this 1st grade transportation vocabulary worksheet as morning work, as a literacy center, in a transportation unit, or as homework, and mark it in seconds with the answer key on the final page.
What’s Included
- Nine picture cards, one vehicle each: a school bus, a wagon, an airplane, a pickup truck, a motorboat, a train, a bicycle, a sled and a car
- A word box of all nine words, printed in alphabetical order while the pictures are not
- One full-width writing line inside every card, all the same length, sized for first-grade handwriting
- Nine original flat-cartoon illustrations drawn for this Transportation Names Worksheet
- A complete answer key on the final page
Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It joins a picture to a printed word. A child who can say bus and can read bus still has to prove they can write it, and this sheet asks for all three in one step.
- It gives spelling a reason. The word box holds the correct spelling, so a first grader copies real words instead of guessing, and the copying is where the spelling sticks.
- It uses vocabulary children already own. Every vehicle here is one they have ridden, watched or wished for, so their effort goes into the writing rather than into working out what the picture is.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
- Before writing, have children say each word aloud and clap its syllables — bi-cy-cle against bus makes the difference audible.
- Sort the nine cards into land, water and air, then talk about which ones could belong to more than one group.
- Cut the word box into nine strips and have children lay each strip on its picture before they write anything down.
- Send it home and ask families to add one more way they travel on the back of the page.
