Description
Counting a handful of mixed coins is one of the first places second graders have to hold two ideas at once: what each coin is worth, and what the pile adds up to. This Valentine’s Day Adding Coins Worksheet gives them that practice with a Valentine’s Day twist, and every coin on the page is drawn to its real size, so a dime really is smaller than a penny and a quarter really is the biggest. Your students identify each coin by sight, not by a word label, then add the values to a total in cents.
The Valentine’s Day Adding Coins Worksheet is a two-page printable with a full answer key, and it climbs in three steps. Part A gives four rows of mixed coins to add to a single total. Part B is the harder move: two sets of coins sit side by side with a plus sign between them, so students find each amount first and then add the two amounts together. Part C is a Valentine’s Day story problem with a written answer line. Print it and go — there is nothing to prepare and nothing to cut out.

Three Reasons It Helps Kids
- The coins are pictures, not words. A student who only ever reads “3 nickels” never learns to recognise a nickel, so every coin here is drawn at its true mint size.
- It mixes the coins on purpose. Adding a quarter, two nickels and two pennies in one row is skip counting and unit counting together, which is what real money asks for.
- Part B adds two totals. Finding two amounts and then combining them is the step between counting coins and spending them, and it is where most of the thinking happens.
Teacher and Parent Ideas
Hand out real coins and have students build row 1 before they write anything, so the drawn coins and the real ones line up in their heads. Use Part B as a partner task: one student totals the left box, the other totals the right box, then they add their two answers and compare. This 2nd grade money worksheet also works well as a February morning warm-up, one row a day, with the story problem saved for Friday. For an extra round, ask students to make the same total a different way and prove it with coins.
