How to teach Apostrophes

Using this Who Does It Belong To Activity, students show possession of objects using correctly with apostrophes.

Apostrophes can be used for many different purposes. This activity provides students the basic practice that they need to when using contractions and possessions.

Play Tic-Tac-Toe (Four in a Row!) by drawing cards and covering up the correct punctuation. Then, sort the cards into categories depending on possession.

Introduce this activity by giving examples of contractions. Next, have students practice turning two words (like, can not) into a contraction. Create an anchor chart for student reference as they work. Then, students complete the activity individually or with a partner. Finally, challenge students to create a list of as many contractions as they can as they read. Once finished, students create a list of objects belonging to their classmates.
