The Words I Know Want to Know Worksheet teaches first graders the move a good reader makes every time a new word turns up: look at the words around it. Instead of a blank organizer to fill in against any book, this Words I Know Want to Know Worksheet gives children a real passage, so the words they know and the words they want to know are both sitting in front of them, with the sentences that explain them.
Children read a short one hundred and thirteen word passage about how a sunflower grows, from the first sprout in the soil to the ripe seeds in the middle of the flower. A full-color coloured-pencil illustration of a sunflower patch sits above the text. Five fill-in-the-bubble questions follow, each asking what one word from the passage means: sprout, stem, petals, bloom and ripe. Four of the five words are explained in the sentence that introduces them, and the fifth has to be worked out from the sentences nearby. Read the passage together, let children bubble in their answers, then check the answer key on the last page and go back to the sentence that proves each one.

Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Read the passage once for the story and once with a pencil. On the second read, have children put a small check over words they already know and a small question mark over the ones they want to know, then answer the questions and see how many of their question marks the text had already explained. Ask them to point to the sentence that proves each answer rather than just saying the letter. This 1st grade context clues worksheet works well as a small-group lesson, a reading-center task, or a warm-up before a longer nonfiction read.
