Description
Telling two words apart is one of the first real comparing jobs a young reader ever does, and it is the skill this Words Same Different Worksheet was built to practice. Words like mop and map or cup and cap share almost every letter, so a first grader has to slow down, look at each letter in order, and decide what is the same and what is different. That careful looking is the beginning of compare and contrast, and it is also the habit that keeps readers from guessing at words later on.
On this printable, students read five rows of four short words and circle the one word in each row that is different from the rest. The change is never in the same place twice: sometimes the first letter changes, sometimes the middle vowel, sometimes the last letter, so children cannot fall into a pattern and stop reading. In Part B, four word pairs are shown side by side and students write S for same or D for different in the answer box. Print the sheet, hand out pencils, and let students work independently or with a partner who checks their thinking out loud. A full answer key is included on the last page.
