From our teachers' playbook

Healthy habits, happy kids

What do kids learn about health and nutrition?

Health and nutrition lessons help kids understand how to take care of their bodies. Younger children learn everyday habits: washing hands, brushing teeth, getting sleep and moving their bodies. They sort foods into groups using MyPlate (fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy) and learn why a colorful plate gives the body what it needs. Older students read food labels, learn how the heart and lungs work during exercise, and find out how germs spread. The click moment comes when a child looks at their lunch and says "I have three food groups today!"

Our favorite ways to teach health and nutrition

Healthy habits stick when kids practice them, not just hear about them. These moves make it real.

Sing the habit

Play a handwashing song at the sink so kids scrub for the whole song. It times the 20 seconds for you, and soon kids hum it at home too. A song turns a rule into a routine.

Why it works: words set to a repeating melody are easier to recall than the same words spoken (Wallace, 1994).

Build a MyPlate

Give kids food pictures and a blank plate divided into sections. They sort the foods, then build a lunch that uses every group. Talk about "sometimes foods" without calling any food bad.

Why it works: pairing a picture with each word gives kids two ways to remember it, a well-tested principle of how people learn (Mayer, 2009).

Read a label together

Bring in a cereal box and read the label aloud, thinking through it: "Serving size first, then what's in one serving." Older kids compare two boxes and decide which has more fiber. Real packages beat textbook pictures.

Why it works: showing first, practicing together, then letting kids try alone is the "gradual release" model teachers have relied on for decades (Pearson and Gallagher, 1983).

Questions parents and teachers ask us

What do kids learn in health and nutrition?

Kids learn healthy habits like handwashing, brushing teeth, sleep and exercise. They also learn food groups with MyPlate, how to make balanced meals, and, in older grades, how to read food labels and how the body works.

What are the five food groups for kids?

The five food groups on MyPlate are fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. A healthy plate includes a variety, with fruits and vegetables filling about half.

How do I teach healthy eating without labeling food as bad?

Talk about "everyday foods" and "sometimes foods" instead of good and bad. Focus on adding colorful foods rather than taking foods away. Kids learn best when meals feel positive.

How long should kids wash their hands?

About 20 seconds, or the length of a short song. Scrubbing the backs of hands, between fingers and under nails matters as much as the time.
