Sixth grade is a bridge between elementary and middle school. In math, kids work with ratios and rates, like 3 cups of flour for every 2 eggs, find unit rates and percents, divide fractions by fractions, and meet negative numbers. They write and solve simple equations with variables, find the area of triangles and the mean, median and range of a data set. In reading, they cite text evidence and track a central idea, and in writing, they back up a claim with reasons. Science often explores the solar system, the water cycle, weather and matter.
Sixth graders love to feel grown up, but they still learn best with a little fun. These moves give them both.
