Maps, globes and the whole wide world
Geography starts close to home. Young kids draw maps of their bedroom and classroom and learn the four cardinal directions: north, south, east and west. Next they read real maps using a compass rose, a legend and a map scale, and find their town, state and country. By 3rd through 5th grade kids name the seven continents and five oceans, learn landforms like plateaus and peninsulas, locate the 50 states, and use latitude and longitude to pinpoint places on a globe, like 40° N, 74° W. The click is when a child opens a map and can tell you exactly how to get somewhere.
Geography is a hands-on, eyes-on subject. These moves help kids think like mapmakers.
Have kids draw a map of the classroom, with a legend for desks, doors and windows, and a compass rose showing north. Then they give a partner directions to a hidden object using only the map. Making a map teaches kids how to read one.
