From our teachers' playbook

Big, huge, gigantic... same idea!

What do kids learn about synonyms?

Synonyms are words that mean the same or almost the same thing, like happy and glad. Younger kids match simple pairs like big and large. Older kids learn that synonyms have shades of meaning: warm → hot → scorching, and picking the right one makes writing sharper. They swap tired words like "good" and "said" for stronger choices and use a thesaurus. The click comes when a kid rewrites "The dog was big" as "The dog was enormous" and grins.

Our favorite ways to make synonyms stick

Synonyms grow kids' vocabulary fast. These moves get them using new words, not just matching them.

Draw both words

Have kids fold a paper in half and draw "small" on one side and "tiny" on the other. Then talk about what's different. Drawing shows kids that synonyms are close, but not always identical.

Why it works: children learn more from words and pictures together than from words alone (Mayer, 2009).

Shades of meaning flash

Flash a set like "cold, chilly, freezing" and have kids put them in order from least to most. It's quick, it sparks debate, and it builds precise word choice.

Why it works: researchers who compared ten study methods found practice testing is one of the two that work best (Dunlosky and colleagues, 2013).

Paint chip word ladders

Grab paint chip strips and have kids write synonyms from light to dark, like whisper, talk, shout. Hang them up as a word wall. Kids use them every time they write.

Why it works: going from real objects to pictures to symbols is a core recommendation of the U.S. Department of Education's elementary math guide.

Questions teachers and parents ask

What is a synonym for kids?

A synonym is a word that means the same or almost the same as another word. Fast and quick are synonyms, and so are smart and clever.

What grade do kids learn synonyms?

Kids start learning simple synonyms in 1st and 2nd grade. In 3rd through 5th grade they learn shades of meaning and use synonyms to improve their writing.

What is the difference between synonyms and antonyms?

Synonyms mean the same, like happy and glad. Antonyms mean the opposite, like happy and sad. A fun trick: synonym and same both start with s.

How can I teach synonyms at home?

Play "say it another way." One person says a word, like big, and everyone takes turns naming synonyms until someone gets stuck. Kids love trying to win!
