A synonym crossword puzzle worksheet asks a student to do two things at once: search her own vocabulary for a word that means nearly the same as the one in the clue, and then check that word against the letters the puzzle has already given her. That second step is what makes a crossword different from a matching page. A guess that means the right thing but does not fit the boxes is a signal to keep thinking, and the student corrects herself without a teacher saying a word.
This worksheet gives third grade students an eight-word crossword with clues written in plain sentences. Each clue names a familiar word — glad, little, shout, chilly, begin, gift, silent, pretty — and asks for a word that means about the same. There is deliberately no word bank. Without a printed list of choices, a student cannot solve the page by counting squares and matching lengths; she has to reach for the word herself, and the crossing letters are what confirm it. Below the puzzle, a short written question asks her to explain why a writer might choose beautiful rather than pretty, which moves the page past recognition and into the shades-of-meaning thinking that third grade standards ask for. Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It makes vocabulary active. Recognizing a synonym on a list is easy; producing one from memory is the skill that shows up in a student’s own writing.
- It is self-correcting. The crossing letters tell a student immediately whether her word fits, so she revises her thinking before she ever hands the page in.
- It teaches that synonyms are close, not identical. The written question makes a student defend one word over another, which is exactly how strong writers choose words.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Start by solving one clue together out loud so students hear the thinking: say the clue word, name two or three words that come close, then count the boxes. Encourage students to write lightly, since a first answer often changes once a crossing letter appears. When the puzzle is finished, have partners compare the two words they considered for each clue and argue for the better one — that conversation is worth as much as the puzzle. For students who need a lift, cover the grid and ask only for a synonym; for students ready for more, have them write a new clue for a word of their own.
