About this resource
Description
Synonyms are words that mean almost the same thing, and learning to spot them is one of the fastest ways for a young reader to build a richer vocabulary. This synonym match worksheet gives third graders focused practice pairing everyday words with the words that share their meaning, so that begin and start, chilly and cold, and wealthy and rich all become words a student can reach for while reading and writing.
The page moves from recognition to real use in three short steps. Students begin by drawing a line from each word on the left to its synonym on the right, then use a four-word box to finish four sentences by replacing the word shown beside each one, and finally write a synonym of their own for an underlined word in two sentences. Because the last section has no word box, it asks students to pull a word from memory rather than copy one, which is exactly the step that turns a matching exercise into vocabulary a child owns. Print it as morning work, an independent center, homework, or a quick check before a vocabulary quiz.
What’s Included
- A one-page printable worksheet in PDF format, ready to print
- Five connect-the-line synonym pairs using common third grade words
- A four-word box and four sentences to complete with the matching synonym
- Two sentences with an underlined word and a line for a student-chosen synonym
- A full answer key on the second page
Why This Helps Kids
- It grows vocabulary quickly, because every new synonym attaches to a word the child already knows.
- It strengthens reading comprehension, since students meet unfamiliar words in tests and books and can reason toward their meaning.
- It improves writing, giving students precise alternatives to tired words like big, pretty, and quiet.
Ideas for Teachers and Parents
Read the five matching words aloud together before students start this synonym match worksheet, and ask what each one makes them picture. After the page is finished, challenge students to say the four boxed sentences out loud using the original word and then the synonym, and talk about whether the meaning really stayed the same. Keep a running synonym chart on the wall and add a new pair each day, or turn this 3rd grade synonyms worksheet into a partner game where one student says a word and the other answers with a synonym before the timer runs out. Older or faster finishers can write a sentence of their own for each answer on the back of the page.
