Description
Teaching Transition Words
The Diving Deep Sorting Words Activity helps students see how transition words connect ideas. Words such as however, for example and in conclusion each do a special job in a sentence. Some add more ideas, some compare or contrast, some give an example, some show the order of events, and some sum up. When students know these jobs, they read with deeper meaning and write paragraphs that flow from one idea to the next.
In this diving deep sorting words activity, students read 36 transition word cards and sort them onto two treasure chest sort mats with six groups: addition, compare, contrast, example, sequence and summary. Each card has one clear job, so students can check their own work with the answer key. Next, they use the Sort Record to write their own sentences with one word from each group. A practice worksheet then asks students to find the transition word in each item and name the job it does.
