This 1.OA.4 common core worksheet gives first graders focused practice with fact families — the small group of numbers that make one addition sentence and its two subtraction sentences all at once. Standard 1.OA.4 asks students to understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem, and a fact family is the clearest picture of that idea: if a child knows that 4 and 9 make 13, then 13 minus 4 is not a new problem to solve, it is the same fact read backwards.
The page holds three families, each in its own card. Every card shows the two addition facts on the left and the two subtraction facts on the right, so the pattern sits side by side where a child can see it. Answers go in a printed box after each equal sign, which keeps the work tidy and gives every response the same amount of room. After finishing a card, students should be able to say the three numbers of that family out loud.

Three Reasons This Helps Kids
- It halves the memorizing. A child who owns one fact family owns four facts, because the same three numbers make all of them.
- It builds the unknown-addend habit. Reading 13 − 4 as “what goes with 4 to make 13” is exactly the thinking standard 1.OA.4 is after.
- It sets up regrouping. Students who can move between adding and subtracting fluently have a far easier time with two-digit work later.
