Description
This St. Patrick’s Day Fact Families Worksheet gives first graders practice with the idea that addition and subtraction are two sides of one relationship. Three numbers that belong together make a family, and that family produces four true number sentences: two addition facts and two subtraction facts. Once a child sees that 6 and 7 and 13 always travel together, subtraction stops being a separate thing to memorize and becomes a fact they already know, read backward.
Each of the three cards on the sheet holds a fact-family triangle with the whole at the top and the two parts at the bottom corners. One number in every triangle is left blank, and a different corner is blank on each card, so a child has to find a missing whole once and a missing part twice. Four ruled lines under each triangle hold the four facts. As a 1st grade fact families worksheet it works as morning work, as a math-center task, or as homework during St. Patrick’s Day week, and every family stays within 20 so the numbers match what first graders are fluent with.

Three things make this St. Patrick’s Day Fact Families Worksheet worth the ten or fifteen minutes it takes. First, moving the blank around teaches flexibility: a child who can only find the whole has learned half the skill. Second, writing all four facts by hand is what builds the link between adding and subtracting, because the same three numbers appear in every sentence. Third, the triangle is a picture a child can carry into second grade, where the same organizer holds larger numbers and, later, multiplication and division.
Teachers and parents can stretch this sheet in several directions. Cover one corner of a triangle with a thumb and ask what number is hiding. Build the families with counters or two-color beans before anyone writes anything. Roll two dice, add them, and make a new family on the back of the page. Play a quick round of the addition song below and then race to write the four facts for a family the class picks together.
